I'm sure that some people will find this slogan to be pretentious or corny, but after some introspection, I feel that it truly captures my goal in photography. I am a great fan of gymnastics, dance, and other forms of human movement, and I strive to capture the essense of that movement and associated emotion in my photography.
One of my first subjects after becoming interested in photography was the Stanford women's gymnastics team. I had developed a working relationship with the coaching staff as a writer for the Stanford Daily newspaper, and the coaches were kind enough to allow me to develop my skills photographing the practice sessions. I continued to photograph for the newspaper and yearbook before graduation, and collegiate gymnastics remains one of my favorite subjects even after graduation. I have been to six Women's NCAA Championship meets. I have also worked for the national federations of USA, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia and served as the offiical photographer of the Pacific Coast Classic of men's gymanstics.
In 1996, I "discovered" the sport of Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics (now known simply as Rhythmic Gymnastics, or RG), and it has become my absolute favorite photographic subject. I have traveled to Asia and Europe several times to photograph international events, including several World Championships as well as the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
My experience with gymnastics photography has also led me into the area of dance photography. While living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I worked with several ballet companies, and I have provided my services to several professional sports dance teams, including the San Jose Rhinestones. I also photograph other sports when I get the chance, with my favorites basketball and volleyball.
In order to keep myself busy during the summer months (which are off-season for my most common subjects), as well as to diversify my commercial possibilities, I have also expanded into location portfolio photography for aspiring models. I have a strong preference for outdoor, available-light images, both because of the more natural look and because it requires less equipment and setup. I hope that I will soon be able to combine this with movement photography to produce some on-location dance images.
I have now relocated from San Jose to the Chicago suburbs, where I am seeking assignments in the areas of dance and sports, while also seeking full-time work in web development.
